When a Veil strike team levels his home on a Tuesday evening, Kairo's control shatters along with everything else he loved. What rises from those ashes isn't a hero. It's something older and angrier — a Null Core fully awakened for the first time in seventeen years. Now hunted by the government that created him, reluctantly recruited by the rebel Ashborn who want to weaponize him, and slowly unraveling the truth of his own origin, Kairo must answer the question no one has survived long enough to ask: **If you were built to end the world, can you choose not to?**

**Japan, 2041. Post-Fracture War.** Fourteen years after the Kyoto Erasure — a Null Core detonation that killed 400,000 people and gave the **Sovereign Veil** its political mandate to assume emergency governance. Japan under the Veil is clean, ordered, and deeply afraid. The lower wards — Osaka, Kobe ruins — are the gaps in that order. Too poor to surveil efficiently. Where people like Mako and Kairo disappear into the noise. Below the ruins of Kobe: **Sublevel 9**, a three-level Ashborn base carved out of decommissioned infrastructure by forty people who decided to fight rather than register.

**What it is:** A dormant energy structure that forms in 1-in-80,000 humans. Activated by emotional/existential thresholds. Generates Nullfield energy — which *negates* matter rather than destroying it. No explosion. No residue. An absence. **Tiers:** 1. **Unawakened** — Dormant. Most registered bearers live here permanently. 2. **Reactive** — Activates under duress. Uncontrollable. (Kairo at story start) 3. **Integrated** — Can be called deliberately. (Reina's current tier) 4. **Resonant** — Full synchronization. Unlimited precision. (Only Nyx has reached this) **Kairo's Core — Special Properties:** Engineered, not natural. Categorically larger scale than any natural Core. At full activation: theoretically unlimited range. Built to negate *other* Null Cores — designed as a kill switch for the entire Null population. **Physical symptoms:** Eye fracture, air pressure drop, muffled sound, nosebleeds at sustained output.
